Ian McCaldon's two-year stay at Oxford United looks to be over.

The experienced goalkeeper, signed by former manager Mark Wright from Livingston in July 2001, represented United for what he thought would probably be the last time yesterday in the reserves' 3-1 defeat by Swindon Town Res at the County Ground.

He was returning to Scotland today and, although he was not closing the door on Oxford in case an offer of a new contract is forthcoming, he was being realistic that his chances of getting one are slim.

Most third division clubs cannot afford two goalkeepers on good wages and, as back-up to No 1 Andy Woodman, the U's have highly-rated teenage keeper Simon Cox, who has already played for his country, Ireland, at youth level.

McCaldon, whose contract runs out at the end of May, said: "I've not been given any indication of what's going to happen.

"I'm going back to Scotland today and will see what happens. Everybody's cutting their cloth and I realise that.

"Maybe I can get a Scottish club if nothing comes from Oxford. I'm going on holiday now and I've got an agent who will put my name about, and I'll take it from there.

"I'm going back to Scotland because my girlfriend's there, and my father, who has been quite ill recently.

"But I've got no regrets about coming down from Livingston. Personally, I believe I've become a better player, and a better person. I've matured as a person."
