Social services are appealing for more people to come forward to be foster carers.

The appeal comes as National Foster Care Fortnight is set to start on May 12.

Organised by the National Fostering Network, the event is aimed at highlighting the work of foster carers and the desperate need for more of them.

Fostering is a way of offering children and young people a home while their own parents are unable to look after them. It is often a temporary arrangement.

Sarah Clayson, fostering manager said: "Anyone can apply to be a foster carer.

"It is even possible to foster part-time. We urge people in Oxfordshire to come forward and find out more."

Janet Godden, the county council's executive member for children and young people, said: "We want people from all walks of life and ethnic backgrounds.

"What foster carers do need is to be sure they have the good health and energy needed to care for a child, as well as patience, understanding and warmth of heart."
