Volunteers will dig deep in June to plant the Blenheim Palace Flower Show in the world record books.

They will attempt to set a world record for creating the longest flower bed on the eve of the show.

But the attempt will require an army of volunteers.

A nursery in Essex has grown 10,000 plants for the record attempt, which will take place over three days beginning Saturday, June 14.

They plan to have the flower bed finished in time for the opening of the flower show at Blenheim Palace on Thursday, June 19. It will stretch along the side of the showground.

Organiser Gillian Reason said children were welcome to take part in the record attempt. It was hoped certificates would be presented to some of those taking part.

Ms Reason said: "We have not decided yet if the flower bed will be wooden bordered or whether we will need to dig up turf.

"We are aiming for 100 metres and will be pleased to see as many people there as possible, whatever their gardening experience.

She added: "Horticulturists will be on hand to offer advice about the planting."

The Blenheim Palace Flower Show, now in its third year, attracted more than 42,000 people last year. It has blossomed into one of the leading events in the gardening calendar.

A floral pavilion will again be one of the main features of the show, as will courtyard gardens.
