The speed limit on a busy stretch of road between Wantage and Grove is likely to be cut by 10mph.

Part of the A338 could become a 30mph zone to make it safer for residents living at the new housing development on the former Yoplait dairy site, which is due to be finished next year.

Oxfordshire County Council is hoping to start public consultation about the plans, supported by Wantage Town Council and Grove Parish Council, within the next two months.

A speed camera has already been installed near the development's entrance.

Area traffic engineer Arshad Khan said the new limit could be in place by early next year. He said: "The site was formerly a dairy so there were a lot of vehicles using the road, but that is a lot different to a residential development. A lower speed limit would reduce the risk to children and make it safer for residents to get to and from their homes.

"We need to put the plans out for public consultation, but we are not expecting much, if any, opposition."

The Vale of White Horse District Council asked for the limit to be lowered when it allowed Berkeley Homes to build 104 homes.
