It comes as no great surprise that the protesters against the new refugee camp near Bicester are more concerned with their own perceived interests than in the welfare of people who are mostly victims of American and British foreign policy (Oxford Mail, August 20).

They are also victims of a vicious campaign in certain sections of the Press, assisted by a combination of Tory opportunism and Labour mendacity.

But it takes a quite remarkable level of stupidity to swallow the line that anyone would be willing to leave their home, travel thousands of miles and pay hundreds, even thousands of pounds for transportation, so that they can come here and scrounge off the taxpayers.

The truth is that while many are refugees from repressive regimes, most are probably economic migrants, the subject of New Labour calumny, whose only crime is the need to earn a living that is no longer available to them in their home countries.
