I thought roads were for traffic to travel on, and at a speed to keep it free flowing.

Putting a 20mph limit in some Oxford streets (Oxford Mail, August 13) will make no difference. Cyclists and pedestrians may be pushing for slower speeds, but this will only create more traffic jams.

If a pedestrian walks aimlessly into the road without using a pelican crossing, no matter what speed a car is doing, it will hit the pedestrian.

Likewise, if a cyclist carries so much baggage, causing the bike to wobble, a collision will occur.

Enforcement of the 20mph limit will be impossible, for it applies to all road users, including cyclists.

I would rather see fines imposed on pedestrians walking in the road, like in America where it is called jay walking, and cyclists fined for riding on pavements, wobbling into the centre of the road and not signalling.

Forget slowing vehicles, let's punish the real culprits, cyclists and pedestrians. We have green cycle lanes for the cyclists, red bus lanes for the buses. How about blue car lanes for the cars?

We can then all stay in our own little lane with no fear of hitting each other.

Keep the speed limit at 30mph and concentrate on tackling stupidity by pedestrians and cyclists.
