Thame United boss Mark West says a half-time roasting was the secret behind his side's 8-1 thrashing of Ryman League Division 1 South outfit Egham Town in Saturday's FA Cup preliminary round.

Alex Stewart grabbed a hat-trick, while a header from Mark Avery, an own goal, and other strikes from Jon Gardner, Ben Freeman, and John Mitchell, were the other scorers in the biggest win of the round.

They now play Kent League Premier outfit VCD Athletic.

West, who took over from Andy Sinnott quit in a row over his playing budget, said: "In the first half we didn't play very well at all and we were lucky to go in 2-1 up, because our keeper Steve Smith had to make a number of good saves.

"But we put things right in the second half. I basically told them to pull their fingers out.

"Our front two were having a stroll in the first half and the midfield were nowhere near to how they should have been playing.

"I said to them "do you want to stay in the FA Cup or not?' And I could not have asked for more in the second half. We played some great football."
