Road repairs in south Oxford are due to continue for another fortnight.

But Oxfordshire County Council says the work should be finished within the allotted two-month schedule.

The promise comes after traders demanded compensation, claiming the roadworks in Abingdon Road, which began on July 23, have hit trade badly.

Work is being carried between Step Ground Bridge and Norreys Avenue, with parking suspended between Norreys Avenue and Lake Street.

Within four weeks of the work starting, owners of hotels and guest houses in the area complained it had been their worst-ever summer. They said trade had halved because tourists were going elsewhere.

David Robertson, the council's executive member for transport, said there was no legal requirement to pay compensatation.

He added: "Work started on July 23 and we stated it would take eight weeks. It is still in its sixth week, and it will finish within the timescale."
