Concerns that a Wallingford pub could be opening into the early hours of the morning have been allayed by the landlady.

Jackie Howard, of the Dolphin in St Mary's Street, applied for a public entertainment licence, which could allow the pub to remain open until 1am.

But she said the licence was simply to cover her karaoke evenings once a month and for the town's Bunkfest.

She said: "There is no way I will be opening after 11pm -- I'm dead on my feet by then and I've had enough.

"I have explained to my neighbours that I will not be staying open until 1am because I do not want them worried that there will be rowdyism here into the early hours of the morning."

Town clerk Andrew Rogers discussed the licence with Mrs Howard and assured the town council it was not for late opening.

He said: "It is a well-run pub and the landlady assures us it is just to cover karaoke sessions."

The council has raised no objection to the licence application.
