A councillor is appealing for fresh ideas on how to improve the way taxis operate in Wantage.

The Vale of White Horse District Council had been asked to look into whether a loop system could be set up in the town, with a new feeder rank where drivers would wait until a space became available in the main Market Place rank.

The suggestion was made following concern about taxis having to double park in the rank at busy times.

But following a visit to see how a loop system worked in Newbury, councillors decided because of the road layout and the one-way system in Wantage, a similar scheme would not be workable.

Councillor Joyce Hutchinson said the idea should be looked at again once the Limborough Road retail park opened, as that could bring new opportunities for a possible loop system.

She said any other suggestions as to where a feeder rank could be located would be considered by the taxi forum.

"We need to accommodate the taxis without any danger to the public," she said. "We want to stop the double parking but we don't want public parking in the town to be affected."

Mrs Hutchinson has also asked council officers when two new spaces on the Market Place rank are to be marked out for taxis. In February the council approved plans to extend the rank but the road markings have not yet been altered.
