A group fighting plans to build an accommodation centre for asylum seekers on the outskirts of Bicester is urging people to write to Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.

The Bicester Action Group has accused Mr Prescott of making a mockery of the planning system after he overturned independent inspector Paul Taylor's recommendation not to build the centre between Piddington and Arncott.

Sue Baxter, co-founder of the group, said she had been inundated with e-mails from people all over the country who wanted to do something.

The group has mounted a letter-writing campaign and is asking people to write to Mr Prescott to voice their opinions.

Mrs Baxter said Mr Prescott's decision to overturn Mr Taylor's recommendation had been met with "dismay, disgust and a real fear that British democracy was being replaced by a dictatorship" by people from all over the country, as well as the surrounding the area.

The group plan to collate letters and e-mails and forward them to Mr Prescott.

People who want to take part in the campaign can e-mail the group's website at www.bag2002.co.uk or send the letter to Bicester Action Group, c/o Arncott Emporium, Woodpiece Road, Arncott, Oxon.
