A teenage cricketer has been banned from playing for his club for the rest of the season after a flare-up on the pitch.

Ollie Smith, 17, appeared before a disciplinary committee of Minster Lovell Cricket Club on Monday, following the incident on August 31.

As reported in the Oxford Mail, he needed hospital treatment after being attacked by an East Oxford CC player during an Oxfordshire Cricket Association division 7 league game.

Team captain Kieren Bushnell said: "The committee was satisfied that he broke the English Cricket Board's code of conduct about crude and abusive language."

East Oxford banned their player, Adnan Hamid, for the rest of the season.

The OCA is investigating the incident which led to the abandonment of the game.

Mr Smith, who was represented at his club's meeting by his father David Smith, has been told by his club to write a letter of apology for what he said to Mr Hamid during the game.

The disciplinary committee, chaired by Minster Lovell CC president John Kay has also served him with a nine match ban during the 2004-5 season suspended fore a year.
