Banbury Utd 2,

Newport IOW 1

Banbury stretched their unbeaten run to seven games in the Dr Martens Eastern Division on Saturday.

The first period was a scrappy affair with neither side dominating play.

Newport had the best chance after 17 minutes when Lee Chudy's shot went wide of Simon Tricker's left-hand post.

Banbury responded and George Redknap headed against the foot of a post on 30 minutes after good work from Mark Simms.

The visitors opened the scoring on 44 minutes when Stuart Cannie headed in a cross from substitute Jamie O'Rourke.

Banbury deservedly equalised in the 55th minute as Redknap got behind the Newport back four to lob the advancing Simon Arthur in style.

Newport should have done better in the 65th minute after the lively O'Rouke eluded tackles from Les Robinson and Chris Potter, only to see his driven cross missed by Chudy at the far post.

On 77 minutes, Newport were reduced to ten men when Glen Howes was sent off for a second bookable offence after clashing painfully with Ollie Stanbridge.

The second Banbury goal came a minute later when Potter scored following a good passing move started from the back by Kieran Sullivan.

Banbury: Tricker, Blossom, Robinson, Sullivan, Allen, Eldridge, Stanbridge, Billington, Simms, Redknap, Potter. Subs: Jenkins, O'Neill, Spriggs, Stidder, Brock.

Attendance: 272.
