Oxford's director of coaching Steve Hill hit out at Cambridge's tactics after the 122nd Varsity Match ended in an 11-11 draw at Twickenham.

The Dark Blues dominated the game territorially, especially in the second half, but their rivals defended strongly and drew level with a late try to retain the MMC Trophy.

At the final whistle, Cambridge players jumped for joy, while Oxford, stunned that they had not won, slumped to the ground in dismay.

Praising his side's positive attitude, Hill said: "I think one team very much came to play today - I'm not quite sure what the others were doing.

"They were defending a lot of the time and they defended well. But we see a responsibility in this match of showing a game which is positive, with sides who take the game to each other.

"I think Oxford players could be proud of themselves today.

"I would never be implicitly critical of my opponents, but if you look at the positives - to keep the ball in hand and attacking, as opposed to kicking the ball up in the air and chasing - then I think that's the difference in the two sides' styles.

"Both styles are perfectly viable strategies in an attempt to win a Varsity Match.

"We had decided we wanted to play a certain way, which has been successful during the term - not only on the pitch but also in terms of crowds, who watch our games at Iffley Road."
