Shadow Home Secretary David Davis will be in Bicester on February 26 to discuss the Government's controversial asylum policy.

About 300 residents are expected to turn out for the Question Time-style meeting at Bicester Community College, in Queens Avenue.

North Oxfordshire MP Tony Baldry, who organised the meeting, will outline the procedure for next month's judicial review hearing.

Mr Davis is expected to talk about the Conservative Party's alternative asylum policy. Mr Baldry said: "This is an excellent opportunity for local residents to hear why the Conservatives would scrap the Home Secretary's disastrous plans for large, rural asylum accommodation centres.

"Everyone, from the Red Cross to the Refugee Council, has said that smaller, more urban centres are in the interests of asylum seekers and local residents alike."

Last August, an independent planning Inspector recommended the Government's scheme should not go ahead, but the decision was overturned by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.

Cherwell District Council has since been given leave to appeal the decision.

Mr Baldry said: "This will now go to Judicial Review and this public meeting will be an opportunity to answer local people's questions on the legal action being taken by Cherwell District Council."
