An Australian theme bar in Oxford, able to accommodate 900 people, would be glass-fronted with a large bar, dance floor and soft seating areas.

The Oxford Mail revealed last month that Regent Inns had pinpointed the corner of George Street and Worcester Street for a Walkabout bar and restaurant.

Plans showing how the bar would look have been unveiled. It would take up 71-79 George Street, including the site of the Opium Den restaurant, which will move, replacing the Mongolian Wok bar, in George Street.

On Tuesday, March 30, Oxford City Council's licensing committee will consider granting a provisional public entertainment licence for the bar, from noon to 2am from Monday to Saturday, and noon to 12.30am on Sundays.

Pc Bill Denver, Oxford police's licensing officer, said the bar would have a "significant impact on both the dynamics and policing of the city centre".

He has suggested it should open only until 1am on Friday and Saturday, and operate within normal pub hours on other days.

David Turner, Regent Inns' property director, said it was considering the suggestion.

With space for 900, it would be one of the city's largest nightspots, second only in size to the Park End nightclub, which holds 1,200. There would be a large bar, a stage for live shows and dance floor.

Stairs would lead up to a landing area with a balcony overlooking the dance floor. The second floor would be shared between Modes Language School and six flats for Walkabout staff.

After warnings from police and highways officers about crowds spilling into George Street - one of the city's busiest roads - the proposed entrance has been moved to Worcester Street. Mr Turner said a balustrade would be put up at the entrance, to stop people stepping into the road.

Tomorrow's meeting at the Town Hall starts at 10am.
