Caretaker manager Graham Rix is urging Simon Cox to keep his feet on the ground after Saturday's stunning debut.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper was thrown into the fray at the 11th hour when Andy Woodman injured his back.

And he produced four super saves as Oxford United held Division 3 leaders Doncaster 0-0 at the Kassam Stadium.

Rix admitted: "He was delighted initially to be on the bench. The fact that he's come in and done as well as he has is a credit to the lad. I'm pleased for him.

"But I told him afterwards it's only one game and he's done nothing yet. Another 500 and then he'll be a very good player!"

Former Portsmouth boss Rix said he checked out Cox's temperament with the club's goalkeeping coach Alan Judge and assistant manager David Oldfield to make sure he was up to it, after learning of Woodman's problem early on Saturday morning.

"I got a call about 9 o'clock to say Woody was struggling with his back. Cox has worked brilliantly since I've been here, so I didn't really have any hesitation."
