House price increases in Oxfordshire were the lowest in the country during March, according to property website Hometrack.

Property prices rose by just 0.1 per cent compared to an average national rise for England and Wales of 0.7 per cent. Prices in Oxford rose slightly faster at 0.2 per cent. The average price of a house in Oxfordshire was £219,200, compared to a national average of £149,800. A house in Oxford costs £217,600 on average.

Hometrack's housing economist John Wrigglesworth said: "The already high prices of property in Oxfordshire mean that even small rises have a great impact. Oxfordshire has suffered more than other expensive southern counties because it is that much further from London, where many high-earning buyers of expensive houses work."

Chairman of the Oxfordshire branch of the National Association of Estate Agents, Cuan Ryan, of estate agents Buckell and Ballard in Wantage, said: "I take this as good news. It's good to see the market stabilising and even continuing to rise slightly."
