SIR - There is nothing wrong with shopping in Oxford.

We have some good shops, cinemas, theatre, and the whole of George Street full of good eating places and pubs.

The Westgate is always clean and full of shoppers. It is a bit messy down by the car park and the moving staircase hasn't moved since the 1980s, but on the whole, it is fine.

The unfriendly attitude of the council to the motorist puts off shoppers. I know park-and-ride is available, but who wants to go shopping and have to struggle on to the bus with hands and arms full of bags?

If you decide to bring the car to town, the charges at the Westgate are exorbitant.

Surely the council doesn't need to pay an adviser to be told the real reason that people aren't using the Westgate, then waste even more money on a facelift.

Get real and more motorist friendly and the people will be back.
