Part of Didcot town centre was sealed off for more than two hours as firefighters tackled a fire above a fast-food takeaway.

The blaze, which broke out early on April 28, was confined to the first-floor kitchen, in the living quarters above Delight 2 Pizza and Kebab House, in lower Broadway.

The three-storey building was extensively damaged by smoke.

Three fire crews from Didcot and Wallingford attended.

Station officer Pete Graham said: "We are investigating the cause of the fire which was in the kitchen of the flat above the shop - which is staff accommodation.

"There was a considerable amount of smoke throughout the building and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a carbon dioxide extinguisher and hoses to deal with the fire."

Investigations into the cause of the blaze were continuing.

The alarm was raised by the shop's owner, Kazim Karabulut

He was in the shop with three members of staff when the fire alarm sounded.

A passer-by told him that smoke was coming from the roof of the building, which is at the end of a row of shops.

Mr Karabulut said: "No-one was in the flat at the time and I can't understand how it started.

"We immediately went upstairs and I had a fire extinguisher, although I could not use it because the smoke was so thick.

"I called the fire brigade which arrived within five minutes.

"They did a wonderful job.

"Thank goodness no-one was hurt."

One member of staff who lives in the flat was made temporarily homeless by the fire.
