Police have been informed about the discovery of a camera hidden in a shower room in a house used by Oxford University students.

St John's College ordered an immediate investigation when the device, concealed in a black bag, was found in a house used by St John's students.

The college's senior dean, Dr Tom Kemp, has written to residents demanding the name of the perpetrator and the location of the place receiving pictures of unwitting people in the shower.

It is believed the house is linked to a neighbouring building by an adjoining door. Dr Kemp said the college was continuing with its investigation and details of the matter had been passed on to police. He said no action had yet been taken against any individual. It is believed the camera had transmitted pictures to a room nearby.

One female resident, in her 20s, described the discovery as very distressing. "I don't feel I can trust the people I live with," she said.

Two male students living in the house said that no-one knew what had happened to the images captured by the camera.
