ANDY Crosby, Oxford United's skipper for the past two seasons, is set to sign for third division rivals Scunthorpe United.

The 31-year-old centre back has been a model of consistency in his time at the Kassam Stadium since joining the U's on a free transfer from Brighton in December 2001.

He was honoured by being named in the PFA Division 3 Select side for this season.

Former manager Ian Atkins's first signing, the former Doncaster, Darlington and Chester defender - who had begun as a trainee at Leeds United - was ideally suited to the third division with his uncompromising, no-nonsense style.

The hard-tackling defender, who is also good in the air, was also greatly respected by his teammates at the Kassam Stadium for his cool professionalism.

In his time with Oxford, he was the team's regular penalty-taker and never missed a spot kick in normal play.

This season he made 45 appearances, converting five penalties, one of them in the 1-1 draw at Glanford Park last September.

He was one of many out-of-contract players made new offers, but the terms were believed to be less than he was previously on.

Scunthorpe are known to be looking for a rugged centre half and, with Crosby keen to return north - he has family at Rotherham - he has decided to join The Irons on what is believed to be a two-year deal.

With Paul McCarthy rejecting Oxford United's new offer to him and Matt Bound released, it means the three centre backs from the start of the season are all leaving.

Goalkeeper Andy Woodman is joining Conference club Stevenage Borough, linking up with former U's midfielder Rob Quinn, who has moved to Broadhall Way from Bristol Rovers.
