Three commemorative plates have been made to mark the 60th anniversary of the deaths of two airmen who saved Wallingford by crashing their plane away from the town.

They will be handed to the three surviving sisters of one of the airmen at the annual service marking their bravery.

Flying Officer John Wilding and Sgt John "Frank" Andrew were with the Royal Canadian Air Force returning with their stricken Halifax bomber on September 9, 1944. The aircraft was heading for Wallingford but the men stayed with it, steered it away from the town and died when it crashed in fields near Crowmarsh.

Their bravery is marked every year with a service at the cairn at the junction of Wilding Road and Andrew Road. This year, to mark the anniversary, councillors will wear formal robes at the service on September 12 at 2.50pm.

The plates, with a picture of a Halifax bomber and an inscription, will be given to Sgt Andrew's sisters Doreen Crowe, Iris Cochrane and Nell Stephens.
