Oxford United's glamorous pre-season friendly against Chelsea on Saturday looks like being a near sell-out.

But the club are unsure whether the attendance will be a Kassam Stadium record.

More than 9,500 tickets for the visit of Jose Mourinho's side had gone by the end of yesterday, with the biggest football gate at the stadium standing at 11,645 for the FA Cup tie against Swindon in December 2002.

Because the game is all-ticket, supporters have until 5.30 on Friday to buy their tickets, with none available on the day of the match.

That means that just over 2,000 need to be sold in the space of two days to beat the Swindon record - and that would be good going.

U's ticket office supervisor, Dawn Wyllie, says the club have been innundated in the lead-up to the match.

"We have not been able to make any outgoing calls at all because the phones have been red hot with people wanting to book tickets for Chelsea," she said.

"The last week and a half have just been absolutely manic here - it hasn't stopped."

United have not been helped by having to sell Chelsea's allocation of tickets as well as their own, although they have virtually all been snapped up.

"Chelsea have got the whole of the North Stand, and they have not got many tickets left," she added.

"We have been trying to sell all of the Oxford tickets, as well as the Chelsea ones, which has just made everything difficult.

"Because there are no tickets available on the day of the match, I think the next two days are going to be just as mad for us all."

Meanwhile, United are keen to remind fans that the kid for a quid deal is in place for next Tuesday's game at home to Ipswich, but the offer only applies to tickets bought in advance.

Children can get their tickets for £1 when an adult ticket, on sale for £10, is bought no later than Monday.
