Oxford City's Nathan Douglas finished a creditable sixth in the triple jump at the Norwich Union London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace.

The Olympics-bound youngster, who still lives and trains in Oxford, produced his best jump of the event in the fourth round with 16.72m.

But it was a competition of the very highest standard, with his Great Britain teammate Phillips Idowu recording a new season's best distance of 17.47m to take victory.

But sixth place for Douglas represented a good performance as he was ranked eighth of the eight athletes in the competition.

He started with a safe jump of 16.54, before two no jumps followed.

He then produced his best jump, but he was unable to match the distance he recorded at the Olympic trials of 16.95m, as his final two attempts were again no jumps.

Idowu boosted his Olympic ambitions with his tremendous final-round leap.

It took him beyond the long-time leader Leevan Sands, from the Bahamas, who had a best on the night of 17.41, with Brazil's Jadel Gregorio third with 17.33.
