Phil Adams has set his sights on breaking the league record of three 18-doll maximums after a full house saw him equal the late great Monty Greenaway's record of two.

Adams, 49, who plays for Premier Section side Cricketers, and works at BMW in Cowley, motored to the max in their 3-0 victory over the Plough.

Adams, the five-times winner of the league's singles title, who is in his 38th league season, is the first to achieve the feat in successive years.

He said: "It's a shame that Monty isn't still around because he would have been one of the first people to congratulate me. I played with Monty for quite a few years, which was a real privilege.

"He told me that once I got that maximum I would get another and it's come true.

"Now I want to go on and beat the record. It took me 37 years to get my maximum and then I go and get two!"

Only 13 other players have ever hit an 18-doll maximum in the league which has been going since the 1950s.

Adams broke the record almost a year to the day he hit his first maximum against Cowley Workers.

League secretary Keith Alder said: "It's a remarkable achievement, but he is an exceptionally talented player. He played in the same team as Monty and he's right up there with him.

"And he's still got about 20 more years to break some more records."

Teammate Geoff Townsend (5-6-5) hit 16 dolls in a scoreline of 30-25, 32-26, 37-22.

No less than five maximum sixes were hit in the George B's 3-0 victory over Garsington Sports, in a 30-25, 31-25, 34-30 scoreline.

Den Butler (5-6-5) top-scored for the George with 16 dolls.

Teammates Martin Cook and Dave Sawyer hit a six apiece, as did the Sports duo of Andy Young and Ken Maunder.

Nigel Rolston was another six-hitter as he clanged off a dozen dolls to help the Fox beat Green Road Club 2-1 in Section 2.

With the game locked at a leg apiece it was Rolston's six that was the difference in the final leg which the Fox took 21-19.

Thirteen proved unlucky for Seacourt's Mick Rocket and Robin Charlton.

Both hit 13 dolls each, but still couldn't prevent leaders New Club A snatching a 2-1 win.

In Section 3, Cowley Community Centre's anchorman was the hero and villain as they lost 2-1 at the Plough B. In the first leg he needed only three to win, but fell two short.

However, in the final leg, needing four to win, he whipped off five dolls to give Cowley the point. Brian Simpson was top dog with 14 dolls.

Blackbird's Dave Simms (4-4-5) hit 13 as they took all three legs at home to the Gladiators in Section 6.

They took all three legs 14-12, 15-10, 14-14 with the last leg going to a three-stick shoot-out.

Section 6 leaders Littlemore Rugby Club had to stage a fightback in their clash against basement boys Ampleforth Arms.

Losing the first leg 16-15, the table-toppers composed themselves to take the next two and with it the game 20-16, 19-12.

Ampleforth's Andy Lewis ruined a good score with a one after hitting two fives, but still top-scored.

Northway Centre kept their title ambitions alive in Section 9 with a 2-1 victory at the Cricketers, Littleworth.

The visitors took the first leg 27-10, but lost the second 19-17.

The final and deciding leg went to a three-stick play-off after the leg was tied 16-16. Ian Turner threw well for his dozen dolls which included a maximum six.

Despite Neil McCredie failing to trouble the doll Eight Bells just managed to get the better of Folly Bridge in Section 10.

Folly won the first leg 12-11 with the Bells taking the next leg 7-4 and the decider 13-12.

Only one doll separated the Post Office and Wolvercote RBL in their Section 11 clash, with the latter triumphing.

The Legion won the first leg 18-17, but lost the second 13-12, as Post Office won 2-1. OXFORD & DISTRICT LEAGUE
