Roma Wilcock has marked her year as Frilford Heath's captain by walking off with her first club championship.

Wilcock, who plays off a handicap of seven and has been a great supporter of the ladies' section since joining the club 1976, cruised home to an eight-shot victory.

Her two-rounds of 73 and 75 over the Blue and Green courses respectively spreadeagled the field, Jane Binning coming second on 156.

Karen Harris was a further nine shots back in third spot, taking that position on countback from Suzanne Simms.

Harris's consolation was taking the nett prize with a score of 131.

The bronze championship went to Dawn Page with a single round of 91.

Wilcock, 63, was excited by her success. "I'm thrilled to bits," she said. "I never thought I would win the championship.

"But I have to say, that I played really well and would still probably have won if defending champion Sarah Webb and Nesta Woolford been playing."

As a result of her success, Wilcock's handicap has ben cut to six, only one short of her lowest ever.

Although captaining and playing in Frilford's successful Mail on Sunday teams, Wilcock, who lives in Southmoor, had only finished runner-up once in the club championship.

However, she has collected a number of other honours.

She won the club's mixed foursomes title with her husband, Bob, in 1979, the Andrew Walsh Cup for five successive years, and the Scratch Knock-out Competition in 2001.

Wilcock has also played for the Oxfordshire Ladies second team.
