Sir - The latest police campaign implores motorists to take more breaks when travelling long distances, as tiredness causes more deaths than drink driving.

I could not agree more, except that on England's motorways, these facilities are few and far between. Signs everywhere tell us to take a break and pull in, but where? On the entire 117-mile M25, there are only three service stations.

Travelling from Oxford to Gatwick Airport, the first and only service station is at Wheatley, six miles from Oxford. There are no more on the M40, none on the M25 and the next one is at Pease Pottage, seven miles south of Gatwick. From one service station to another, a distance of 93 miles.

On French motorways, small areas are set aside every 30 kilometres. These are not large money-grabbing service stations but picnic style pull-ins. Instead of lecturing the motorists, police time and influence would be best spent encouraging French-style pull-ins.
