An investigation has found there were no serious problems in the running of an east Oxford community centre.

Oxford City Council produced a report on the Asian Cultural Centre following complaints by two trustees at an east area parliament meeting last month.

Ali Akkas and Velu Vesudevan said they were concerned about an increase in hiring costs and how income generated by the council-owned centre was spent.

Craig Buckby the council's community and development manager, said charges for the centre's large hall rose from £18.25 to £22.50 per hour, and from £7.25 to £9.50 per hour for all other rooms in July 2003.

Oxford Asian Cultural Association, which manages the hall, in Manzil Way off Cowley Road, previously allowed some groups free or discounted hire depending on their circumstances.

Mr Buckby's report said this led to some hirers asking for the same treatment, and had cast doubt in some people's minds about the association's impartiality.

He said the revision of costs was put in place to create a "fairer and transparent" discount policy.

The association had planned a five-year development programme which it started a few months later than scheduled, said Mr Buckby.

Speaking at an east area committee meeting on Wednesday, Mr Akkas said he and other trustees were not approached by Mr Buckby about the report and were unhappy with the "lack of community consultation". He asked the east area committee to continue investigating.

Mumtaz Fareed, chairman of the centre's management board, said he had still not received any complaints.
