Oxford Silver Machine skipper Greg Hancock moved up to joint second in the Grand Prix series after finishing fourth in a hotly-contested final at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg on Saturday.

He is tied on 91 points with former Oxford star Leigh Adams, but both trail another former Oxford man, Jason Crump, by 23 points with three rounds to go.

The winner of the FIM Scandinavian Grand Prix was Denmark's Hans Andersen. The 23 year-old led the final from start to finish, with Crump second, Tony Rickardsson third and Hancock fourth.

Andersen is now just 11 points off a top-eight berth and a place in the 2005 line-up.

He said: "I'm now in 11th place and proved that I can get into the final. Now I will look to improve on that."

Crump's second place puts him 23 points clear of his nearest rivals. Adams's night finished in the semi-finals and Hancock came fourth in the final - not enough to stop the Australian extending his lead.

"I was 14 points ahead going into tonight's meeting," explained a relaxed Crump. "I just need to keep getting points over the guys near me.

"I came here with one thing in mind - to get into the final."

Rickardsson gave the 16,251 Swedish fans something to shout about all night, but third in the final means he is 27 points behind Crump, and faces a mountain to climb if he is to equal Ivan Mauger's record of six world titles.

Result: 1 Andersen (Den), 2 Crump (Aus), 3 Rickardsson (Swed), 4 Hancock (USA).

Top 6: Crump 114pts, Hancock, Adams 91,Rickardsson 87, N Pedersen 74, Gollob 64.
