Sir - In reply to Elaine Powell (Oxford Mail, November 9), the bus companies do have policies for carrying wheelchairs - one on Oxford Bus Company vehicles and two on Stagecoach.

I work in a residential home and we often take residents on the bus.

On numerous occasions, we have been unable to travel as buggies are taking up all the spaces, although both companies have a directive that wheelchairs take priority.

We have even been pushed aside by mothers eager to get on the bus.

In the past, buggies would have been folded and children held.

If this practice started again, more mothers could get on the bus as both companies provide ample storage space for folded buggies.

We have met some nice young mothers only too willing to fold their buggies so that we can get on the bus, but unfortunately they are very few and far between.

I would like to ask all mothers with buggies to think for a moment what it would be like if they could not get out into the community through someone else's selfishness?

It takes only a minute to fold down a buggy and to ask the driver to help, or to ask them to wait until you are seated until they pull off.

Drivers from both companies are only too willing to help if they are asked.

Don't forget that we will all be old one day and may need a bit of help ourselves.
