Sir - I am appalled by the way the Deputy Prime Minister sees fit to take decision-making out of the hands of elected representatives of Oxfordshire people and give it arbitrarily to the South East England Regional Council (Seera), a collection of non-elected, non-representative officials.

Asking a few people what they think has no meaning in law. Mr Prescott has not carried out a proper opinion poll and any result would not have legal significance anyway.

Politicians have been prosecuted for treason and lost their lives for lesser crimes.

It is time decent MPs revolted against such undemocratic practices.

It is obvious that in the South East, people's opinions don't vary a great deal from those in the North East and as Mr Prescott suffered a staggering defeat there in a democratic way, he is trying other disgraceful means here.

Whether Seera members decide reasonably or not is immaterial - decisions have to come from the elected councils in Oxfordshire.
