A father has told how his daughter's fairytale wedding turned into a nightmare after she lost £1,000 worth of gifts following the collapse of an online company.

Chris and Tanyah Littlefair returned from their honeymoon to find only half of their presents had arrived from The Gift Registry.

Last month, the online "one-stop-shop" for weddings was investigated by BBC consumer programme Watchdog after a number of couples made complaints about not receiving gifts.

Three days later it went into administration and it was revealed the company had incurred losses of more than £300,000 in nine months.

More than 350 couples were left without gifts and some of their guests out-of-pocket. Mr and Mrs Littlefair, who grew up in Great Milton, have missed out on about £1,000 worth of gifts.

They have had the embarrassing task of contacting guests to tell them their gifts had not arrived.

Some have struggled to recoup their money, including Mr Littlefair's brother and best man Ian, who purchased a gift worth £400 using his Switch debit card.

Mrs Littlefair's father Raphael Altman, of Great Milton, said they had received no apology from the Surrey-based firm, even though he wrote directly to its owner two weeks ago. He said: "The wedding was an absolute dream. You only have to look at the pictures and see the bride and groom were in absolute heaven.

"But then it turned into this nightmare. My daughter has been very philosophical about it all and is more concerned about the guests whose gift have not arrived. They were just left continuing to think the gifts had been delivered and it has been embarrassing having to contact them. It's been very unpleasant."

Mr Altman said his daughter, 31, who lives in Chichester, was now trying to put the matter behind her.

He has now joined a group of other people affected by the company's failure.

"People are finding each other through the Internet, and there's a feeling that these victims deserve an explanation," he said.

Chris Herron, of administrators Begbies Traynor, advised guests who had paid by credit card to claim back their money through their companies.

He said: "If any money comes available they may be compensated, but I am afraid it will be only a small percentage of what they paid."
