Traders are calling for urgent action to install CCTV cameras in Didcot because of a continuing plague of vandalism.

Smashed doors and windows, as well as graffiti, broken phone boxes and damaged bus stops continue to be an almost weekly occurrence in and around Broadway, they say.

Didcot Town Council, which initially rejected the idea of installing CCTV cameras in the town centre, agreed after South Oxfordshire District Council promised to fund the purchase and contribute two-thirds of the running costs.

In the spring, it was announced that the cameras would be up and running by the end of the year, but it could now be next summer before the system is operational.

The delay has infuriated Caroline White, who runs Print Express in Broadway. The shop windows have been attacked four times in the last 13 months, doubling her insurance premiums.

Traders say there have been a series of incidents in Broadway this month, including cash machines vandalised and shop windows broken.

Miss White said: "I was promised that the town's CCTV would be installed by Christmas. I have now been informed it will be summer, which is appalling."

Town council leader Margaret Davies said the scheme would soon be going out to tender. She added: "It's only taking half the time it's taking in Wallingford and Henley."
