FA Carlsberg Vase 5th round - Colne 2, Didcot Tn 3: Stuart Beavon's strike five minutes from time sent Didcot Town into the quarter-finals of the FA Vase for the first time, after a pulsating cup tie in Lancashire on Saturday.

Beavon took advantage of a mistake in the home defence to fire under the body of goalkeeper Ross Baxter and secure a place in the last eight.

With a 15-foot slope from one end of the pitch to the other, and Didcot attacking into a gale-force wind, they made little headway in the first half.

Colne took the lead on 15 minutes when Paul Forsyth threaded a neat ball into the box, and Ian Simpson fired across keeper Chris Webb into the opposite corner.

Marshalled by the outstanding Grant Goodall, and Andy Cooper, Town's defence held firm, restricting Colne to half-chances.

Didcot's best chance came when Beavon broke clean through, only to see Baxter block his shot.

After the break, however, with the wind at their backs, Didcot turned on a dazzling performance.

They drew level just six minutes after the interval when Bradley Ward's cross-cum-shot wrong-footed Baxter, and somehow crept over the line.

Glyn Jones then forced an excellent save from Baxter, his dipping shot from an acute angle tipped over the bar.

But Town didn't have to wait long to take the lead.

The diminutive Beavon showed great strength to shake off his marker, Richard Close, before cutting the ball back for Andy Parrott, who made no mistake from close range.

Didcot were inches away from making it 3-1 seconds after the re-start, Ward seeing his lob beat Baxter, but drop onto the roof of the net.

But just as it looked as though Town would run away with the game, an innocuous ball from Paul Walker spun away from Webb and squirmed under the keeper's body.

But Didcot fought back. Parrott hit the crossbar after Ian Concannon's lay-off, before Ward's cross-shot from the right was acrobatically tipped over the bar.

Beavon nearly snatched it for the visitors, but drilled a shot straight at the keeper when well-placed, but made amends just seconds later.

Gavin Cooper's clearance got stuck in the mud, and Beavon converted a Paul Powell pass to send the 120 travelling Didcot fans wild.
