Debbie may have done Dallas but can she do Oxford as well is the question on everybody's lips.

According to producer Mark Gaucher who saw the musical on Broadway and has brought it over here, the answer is yes.

But he's got his work cut out for him because it's not everyday a cult 1970s porn movie is brought to the stage, although Mark promises that although risque there is absolutely no full frontal nudity.

A work in progress is perhaps the best way to describe the musical which premiere's on Thursday at The Old Fire Station, because if the 11-show run is a success then Debbie also gets to do Edinburgh and maybe even the West End!

But how do you bring such an infamous movie to the stage and are the Brits ready for it? "I think it will work better over here because the British are much more up for risque shows and better at the whole Carry On/smutty humour. The Americans are actually quite precious and guarded about things like that," Mark says.

As for the porn element Mark isn't remotely concerned about the shock factor. "Compared to the explicit porn around these days Debbie Does Dallas could probably be on children's television because it's so tame, yet the film is still infamous."

It's basically about some dizzy girls from Texas desperate to raise some money to get onto the Dallas Cowboys cheerleading team. But how far will Debbie have to go to get there? The story follows the efforts of the six gorgeous girls trying to raise enough money to send Debbie to Dallas, alongside Rick the soccer captain and his gang of well-hung hunks as they think of every scam to get their super charged hormonal way with the cheerleader beauties.

"The stage version is Debbie Does Dallas meets Legally Blonde," Mark laughs. But reading between the lines one suspects that the sex is replaced by innuendo in his version. "This isn't hard-core sex action. It's a musical based on a porn movie, and while there is titillation there is no nudity. I want to make that clear so that we can't be accused of bringing in an audience under false pretences although I think you might glimpse a few male bottoms," he says. "Above all it's fun, and while in the film there's lots of sucking and blowing noises, grunting and groaning, we provide singing, dancing and entertainment."

As for the audience, Mark is expecting a great mix of people, more "Jerry Springer show than Sound Of Music."

"That's why we are taking Debbie Does Dallas to Edinburgh if it works in Oxford. Because there is a huge young audience there.

But first Mark is fine tuning the performance over the 10 day period in Oxford, because once he hits Edinburgh it will be open to national reviews and criticism and he wants it to be perfect by then.

As for Debbie, played by Marianne Benedict, Mark said that in the audition he was looking for someone extremely vivacious, sexy and blonde who could play dumb, sing, dance and act.

"Most people can do two out of three so they can sing and act but not dance. But this is a very small knit cast so they need to do all three. And while there might be explicit actions, it will all be done in the best possible taste."

Either way, this is your chance to see this terrific show in its rawest form before anybody else!
