Youngsters attending Cumnor's junior coaching sessions this summer can be sure they will be receiving the best possible advice.

Kent seamer Simon Cook, who learnt his craft at the Oxfordshire club a decade ago, has devised a comprehensive coaching programme for the young cricketers to follow over 18 Wednesday evenings.

Cumnor have four ECB level two coaches who will deliver the sessions, which are designed for children aged seven and upwards. Cook himself will attend a number of the sessions when his playing commitments allow.

"The younger players will play fun games and learn a specific skill each week with the aim of achieving bronze, silver and gold awards in cricket skills," Cook said.

"Those aged 13 and over will focus more on technique. They will practise in the nets and the middle, take part in tactical sessions and benefit from specialist batting, bowling and wicketkeeping workshops."

In case of rain the youngsters will still be learning via video, quizzes and games in the club's pavilion.

Cook, 27, transferred to Kent this winter after a successful spell at Middlesex. Last year he was ranked the leading bowler in domestic limited overs cricket.

In the Totesport League, he took 39 wickets at an average of 15.35, and twice claimed five wickets in a match, with a season best of 6-37.

Cumnor's youth section has already produced an impressive list of Oxfordshire players, with Cook's brother Adam, Ian Crosby and John Williams all representing Oxfordshire in 2004.

Alastair Lee, Cumnor's youth cricket manager, said: "This is a fantastic coup for Cumnor.

"Our aim with the programme is to raise the bar in terms of quality of coaching delivered, to improve the standard across the board of skills, including fielding, captaincy and general cricket craft.

"We have a huge player-base from across the area, and welcome boys and girls from all backgrounds."

Demand for the scheme is proving popular with existing members, who have already signed up.
