The Oxford-built Mini's reputation continues to go from strength to strength -- even as a used car.

The car emerged as a double winner at an industry awards presentation for the secondhand market.

It carried off the Used Car of the Year prize while the Cooper S model took the sporting car title at the awards organised by Auto Express magazine and motor trade publication Glass's Guide.

Auto Express editor-in-chief David Johns said: "The Mini is among the most desirable cars on both the new and used markets.

"All models are great to drive, and there's a Mini to appeal to everyone.

"Throw in the excellent tlc package, which covers the servicing costs of the car for five years and is specified on 95 per cent of new models bought, and you have a car that's headache-free as a used buy.

"With no hidden costs our judges were unanimous in naming it the used car of the year for 2005."

It is the first time the car -- which has been on the market since July 2001 -- has won a used car title, but it has already won a host of new car awards, including the coveted North American Car of the Year in 2003.

Managers at Mini's parent firm BMW are delighted with the latest honours for the Cowley-built car.

Spokesman Elyssia Graymore said: "It's a fantastic achievement and the awards just keep on coming, year after year.

"A lot of dealerships are investing a lot of money in areas for used cars as more come on the market."

Sales of used Minis have been growing dramatically, according to staff at the North Oxford Garage Mini dealership in Long Hanborough.

Sales manager Nathan King puts this down to the car's character.

He said: "It's the fun aspect. There are a lot of cars that just aren't as much fun as a Mini, it's individual.

"It's also good value. They don't depreciate much."
