Abingdon Town could quit the Ryman League at the end of the season - and seek to join the GLS Hellenic League or the Combined Counties League.

Chairman Phil Evans was keeping his cards close to his chest.

But he admitted that a change of leagues was being considered.

He said: "We are not clear about our intentions for next season. A decision will be made by the club by the end of the month."

It's understood that Ryman Division 2 with just 16 clubs is becoming increasingly less attractive to Town when travelling costs and financial constraints are taken into account.

A switch to the Hellenic League or Combined Counties would offer Abingdon reduced travelling and the opportunity of increasing home attendances.

If they were to return to the Hellenic League it would mean the club will have gone full circle from the days they started climbing the non-League ladder.

Town were members of the Hellenic League from 1953-88.

They then spent one season in the London Spartan League, before stepping up to the Isthmian League, or the Vauxhall League, as it was then known, twice finishing sixth in Division 1.

But they have experienced leaner times in recent years, prompting consideration of a switch to more local leagues.

As Abingdon are in Ryman Division 2, they are on the same level as the Hellenic League Premier Division.

Hellenic League secretary Brian King explained that the Football Association leagues' committee made the decisions when it came to the placement of clubs.

"The next meeting is in April and we will know more about the situation after that meeting," he said.
