Witnesses to a murder outside an Oxford community centre who fear speaking out have been offered protection by police if they come forward.

Acting Det Supt Dave Lewis said witnesses to the killing of Moshean Cameron could be given the same protection as those who testified in the Birmingham gangland killing of Charlene Ellis and Letisha Shakespeare.

Mr Cameron, 23, who lived at Littlemore, had been married six months when he was stabbed to death outside Blackbird Leys Community Centre on April 30 last year.

Speaking after a press conference one year on, Mr Lewis said: "There are people out there who know who killed Moshean and we want them to come forward.

"Whatever is preventing people from coming forward, the situation must have been much worse in the recent case in Birmingham of Charlene Ellis and Letisha Shakespeare.

"People came forward and justice was done. Those responsible received stiff sentences.

"I would like to reassure anyone who is thinking of coming forward to speak to the police that we will treat their information with the greatest respect and will do our utmost to support and protect them."

Mr Lewis said he could not speculate about why people had not come forward, but he did not believe the murder of Mr Cameron was gang-related. Mr Cameron's mother-in-law Jackie Yearwood, of Redwood Close, Blackbird Leys, made a tearful plea for witnesses to contact the police.

She said: "It has been a year now since Moshean's death and the pain continues. His family are still left with unanswered questions and have to live every day knowing that the person responsible for his murder has not been brought to justice.

"I ask people in Blackbird Leys who know who stabbed Moshean to contact police immediately.

"What are you scared of? A lot of people there saw."

She said that Mr Cameron was a lovely person who was deeply missed by his family.

In December last year, Kirk Morgan, 24, who knew Mr Cameron when they both lived in their native Jamaica before 2002, was acquitted of killing him,
