Wartime fighter pilot Tony "Binxie" Binks came to the end of the runway and died aged 89.

His wife Vivienne said in a newspaper obituary notice: "He decided, having reached the end of the runway, to take off on April 8."

The former pub landlord died in the bar of the Six Bells in Warborough. A small memorial has since been placed on the bar by landlord Ben Salter.

It states: "He baled out in the Six Bells, his second home."

Wing Commander Binks, who lived in Warborough, served in the RAF for more than 20 years and was awarded the DFC -- the Distinguished Flying Cross

During his time in the RAF he flew Beaufighters and then formed 618 Squadron of Mosquitos.

He was a well-known figure in the area as landlord of the Chicken In The Basket pub, in Benson, in the 1970s.

He is survived by his wife and six children.
