Teenage ace Tom Woolley carded his best performance with a joint-first place finish in the prestigious Nick Faldo Series.

The Chipping Norton youngster tied for the lead in the under 16 section with a gross 74 (nett 70) at Royal West Norfolk.

This placed him third in the overall competition, which includes players up to 21 years of age.

Woolley, 16, has played at Chippy since he was nine, but club secretary Simon Chislett said it was in the last year that he has really started to shine.

"He has gone through a bit of a purple patch," he said. "He has been playing well for a number of years - his handicap has been between five and four in the last 12 months."

The day before his Nick Faldo win, Woolley also tied for first place in his club's Geoff Roberts Medal after scoring a nett 63.

He comes from a big golfing family as two of his grandparents have been captains at Chippy, his father Paul plays off six and younger brother James is also a keen player.

As for his prospects, Chislett said: "He's got the capability. One of the great things about him is that he's got a great temperament.

"He's a very polite, calm young man and he is able to repeat his swing every time."
