An eleventh-hour attempt to overturn a decision that could see Didcot double in size by 2026 has failed.

Didcot town councillors had asked South Oxfordshire District Council's scrutiny committee to rethink its decision to back further expansion.

But their appeals fell on deaf ears and the district council's response to the South East England Regional Assembly's South East Plan remains unchanged.

The cabinet agreed to back an option that would see most of the county's new development built in Didcot and Bicester. That could mean a further 5,000 houses in Didcot, on top of the 4,300 already planned.

Town council leader Margaret Davies told a meeting on Wednesday night that Didcot did not have the roads or infrastructure to cope.

But John Cotton, cabinet member for planning, said there was support for the plans, even in Didcot.
