Opera fans from across the UK could turn up in Oxford for April 30's postponed Andrea Bocelli concert -- because promoters have not told them the event is off.

Last month, Jane Wills, 40, of Coventry, booked two tickets for £168, but started panicking last week when she still hadn't received her tickets for the event at Oxford's Kassam Stadium.

She called promoters at the Very Impressive Party Company (Vipco) office in the Old Barns, High Street, Islip, but only reached an answer phone.

Three days ago she was called by Vipco and told the concert was not going ahead. She said: "I couldn't believe it -- if I'd not phoned I would never have found out the concert had been rescheduled. I could have driven to Oxford for nothing.

"To add insult to injury, I was then told they had no records of my payment and that was why I'd not been sent the tickets."

On Thursday, Ms Wills was called again and told there was a record of the transaction and the tickets would be sent out to her.

She said she spoke to Mike Dandridge, who runs Vipco, and asked him why he didn't know more as "he was one of Vipco's promoters".

Ms Wills was told by Mr Dandridge that there was "no specific reason" for the postponement. He added that it was neither Vipco's nor Mr Bocelli's fault.

Frances Snelling, 59, and husband John, 62, were due to travel to Oxford from Somerset, but fortunately their 30-year-old daughter Rhona, who works at Oxford University Press in Walton Street, saw an Oxford Mail billboard and tipped off her parents.

Vipco's answer phone message told callers: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the rescheduling of the Andrea Bocelli concert.

"At this point we still have not had a confirmed date, but will inform everyone as soon as we can. The company is not in a position to offer refunds at this time."

Mr Dandridge told the Oxford Mail: "Please wait for a written statement. We are waiting for a date from the Italians."

But Mr Bocelli's agent, Barbara Vitalli, of Italian management company MT and Blues, said: "We are waiting for the final reply from the promoters, so at the moment there is no news.

"We have given them a couple of dates in the summer when Mr Bocelli is available."
