How stupid can people be? As late as Friday, we published a warning to May morning revellers in Oxford that they risked serious injury if they jumped from Magdalen Bridge.

Our headlines, Just don't do it -- May morning bridge jumpers warned over risks to their lives -- couldn't have been more prominent.

Yet today we are reporting that more than 100 idiots ignored the warning.

The result was inevitable -- 40 were injured, 10 were taken to hospital and one suffered spinal injuries so serious that he might be paralysed.

High spirits are to be expected on these occasions, and particularly when May morning falls on a Sunday after many people have enjoyed a Saturday night out.

But for so many, some allegedly intelligent students, to perform such dangerous acts, at great risk to themselves and at great cost to the NHS, is beyond our comprehension.

The irresponsibility of the few means that Magdalen Bridge will almost certainly be closed next year -- and rightly so.

The losers -- those who simply want to enjoy Oxford's traditional May morning celebrations -- will know whom to blame.
