Fans of Monopoly are being challenged to don a hat or an old boot and raise money for charity.

Macmillan Cancer Relief has taken inspiration from the Oxford version of the game and organised a real-life enactment, on June 8.

The charity is fundraising for its £1.2m appeal which will pay for new cancer workers in Oxfordshire, including a specialist nurse at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, a children's support worker for SeeSaw, and three workers at the Oxford Befriending Network.

Starting from Gloucester Green, 25 teams will be pounding the city's streets to snap up properties ranging from Blackwell's bookshop and the Randolph Hotel to the Oxford Mail and the Kassam Stadium.

With just four hours to visit as many squares as possible, every team will have a chance to own a slice of Oxford if they can correctly answer four questions.

Extra Community Chest points will be awarded to teams that meet Mr Monopoly on their travels, and organisers have promised there will be no unpleasant 'Go straight to jail' surprises.

Prizes for the winning team include a visit to the Williams Formula 1 motor racing team's factory at Grove, near Wantage.

Competitors are also invited to adopt the identity of a Monopoly piece to win an extra prize for the best-dressed team.

Organiser Jo Faulkner-Harvey said: "This is a fantastic event never before seen in Oxford. It's a great excuse for a fun day out and you don't have to be a board game fanatic to take part -- just have a sense of fun and energy."

Players will be given a rover bus ticket to help them on their way, although players can use any form of transport -- except cars.

The teams, whether they are family, friends, or work colleagues, need to be made up of four to six people and the entry fee per team is £100.

Miss Faulkner-Harvey said entries should be submitted as soon as possible, as players also need to raise £100 each for the £1.2m appeal before the game begins.

The charity is holding a number of fundraising events in the coming month. For further details, call Miss Faulkner-Harvey on 01296 622550.
