A man who claimed he knocked out a clubber because of a “Brokeback Mountain” reference to his shirt was jailed.

Jamie McAnulla, 29, of Moor Avenue, Witney, punched Craig Siwek once, leaving him having a medical fit in the middle of a dance floor and suffering from a broken cheekbone.

At his trial McAnulla claimed Mr Siwek made a reference to the gay cowboy film as he went to pass him at the Izi nightclub in Witney in November 2008 – although Mr Siwek strongly denied it.

Matthew Corrie, prosecuting, told Reading Crown Court the pair were captured on CCTV talking, before McAnulla threw the punch. He fled but was caught by police.

McAnulla had previously been convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in 2003 and two counts of battery in 2007.

Mark Dixon, defending, said his client maintained he had been provoked.

Judge Anthony King sentenced McAnulla to 40 weeks behind bars for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
