Steven Dunkerley’s experience in trying to take photos involving people (Oxford Mail, March 2) suggests that the campaign by HM Government and sections of the media to instil a state of paranoia in the public has met with some success.

I have to point out that a free society needs trust, not suspicion.

I’d suggest he observes the criminal’s first principle – don’t get caught.

He should buy himself a camera with a zoom lens with a minimum ratio of at least 10:1.

It isn’t a perfect solution, but at least it will give him the opportunity to stand far enough away from his subjects to reduce his chances of being observed.

It has just occurred to me that I may have committed a criminal offence by writing this letter!
