John Tanner is in cloud cuckoo land if he thinks a modern tram system linking local towns with Oxford is a possibility (Oxford Mail, February 16).

Sorry John, the Oxford public do not wish to hear your wishful thinking. Most recent council debate has centered around lack of funds for many worthwhile projects, so how can we even consider such an idea of trams linking the fringes with the city?

I doubt the idea would solve Oxford’s traffic problems and carbon emissions, as most folk today still want to travel as and when it suits them – not following tram timetables.

The cost of such an ambitious project would be billions of pounds and the chaos caused by the installation of guide rails for the many miles separating the towns would have a detrimental impact on local businesses. The majority of places around the world that have similar systems have seen their city develop and grow around the tram system – not having trams arrive when the cities are already gridlocked.

Perhaps Mr Tanner should have a feaseability study done before throwing numberless dice into the hat.
