ROTARY clubs are hosting a series of fundraising events to help eradicate polio worldwide.

Clubs in Abingdon, Oxford and Woodstock are urging residents, shoppers and music lovers to help children threatened by the disease.

The fundraising is part of Rotary’s national Thanks for Life campaign which aims to raise £1m.

Events have included a display of Rotary work at the Sainsbury’s store in Kidlington on Friday, and a gala concert organised by the Rotary Club of Oxford Isis at The Jacqueline du Pre Music Building, in St Hilda’s College, on Saturday.

A reception and open evening is being hosted by Woodstock Rotary Club in Woodstock Town Hall at 7.30pm today.

The Rotary Clubs of Abingdon, Abingdon Vesper and Oxford Spires are mounting a display at Tesco’s in Abingdon on Saturday.

Rotary Club of Abingdon president David Pope said: “We are so close to stamping out polio and we hope these events will encourage more people to get behind the initiative.

“It is vital that we eradicate it from the four remaining endemic countries, or the likelihood is that the disease will spread again to countries which have been cleared.

“With the public’s help we can wipe out polio.”
